Congratulations! Your stellar resume helped land that job interview! Make sure you know the following information before going in:
- Be versed on what the company does: Know what the company does before you go to the interview. If you don’t, you will look like an amateur and this will most likely ruin your chances for getting the job. Instead, be sure to visit the company web page and familiarize yourself with the organization’s mission statement.
- Understand how you will fit in: Goal …mission…project…objectives. How will you fit in with this company and help them reach each of these? If you are not sure how you can use your skills as part of the team, it may be best to take an assessment, discover what you have to offer, and be prepared to speak on it during your interview.
- Advocate and know your worth: This is always a gray and never-dull area. Before you meet the interviewer face-to-face, make sure you understand what you are worth, what compensation you expect, and ultimately what compensation you will be happy with. You are not a bargain. Companies do expect to pay for your expertise. Let them know that you know what your skills are worth.
- Acknowledge your work style: Think about your ideal workplace and do you see a cubicle or wide and open space? With the organization you are targeting, is there an area that you will be able to customize? Because you will be at the job for the majority of your day, you’ll want the experience to be as pleasant as possible. For this reason, do not forget to ask about the work environment and know where you will sit. You don’t want to be surprised by the location of your desk on your first day of work.
Remember that you’ve been invited to an interview to provide more information about your skills and qualifications. Make sure you are duly familiar and ready to speak on all items listed above before sitting down with your potential employer. First impressions are lasting impressions.
